Madrid is situated in the centre of Spain and is a region consisting of a homonymous single province where the capital of Spain, Madrid, is located. It has an area of 8,027.69 sq. kilometers.
Vinos de Madrid is a Designation of Origin located in the southern part of the province of Madrid region. It covers 54 municipalities and is divided into three sub-zones (Arganda, Navalcarnero, and San Martín), each of which produce different types of wine. The DO Vinos de Madrid makes the capital of Spain the only capital in the world to give its name to a Designation of Origin for wine.
The main grapes varieties are Garnacha Tinta and Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) for reds and Malvar and Albillo Real for whites. Other authorised grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Negral, Petit Verdot, Graciano (reds) and Airén, Macabeo, Moscatel de Grano Menudo, Parellada, Torrontés, Sauvignn Blanc (whites).
