Boca Tapas Bar is a newcomer to the dining scene in St. John’s, on Newfoundland Island in Canada. The owners decided to open a Spanish locale to offer something different and because they saw a gap in the market in that people were tired of the typical meals consisting of several courses and were looking for something more casual. Enter the tapas bar.

Said the owners in thetelegram.com, “Tapas are an authentic Spanish item and you’ll see we’re authentic… [We are serving] the top hits at Spanish tapas bars from northern Spain to southern Spain to the major cities. Anywhere in Spain you go, you’ll see these exact [dishes]. I think that people here are going to be in for a treat.”

The menu is indeed authentic, and many products are imported directly from Spain. Highlights include the stellar selection of charcuterie such as Ibérico chorizo, pancetta and salchichón as well as Serrano ham.

There is paella, Russian salad, Spanish omelet, cod and also ham and cheese croquettes, patatas bravas, Spanish olives, and even a selection of pintxos. Boca also has Ibérico ham on hand, which is carved for guests during a special promotion each day.

Says one of the owners, “There’s a lot of things on the menu that people simply haven’t tried before around here, unless they’ve tried it in Spain… I don’t know of anything on the menu that’s available anywhere else in the city.”

There’s a good chance that Boca’s uniqueness, and Spanish food’s innate deliciousness, will win over many local palates.
