Prestigious American wine critic James Suckling recently released his list of the Top 100 Spanish Wines of 2017. He is the former Senior Editor and European Bureau Chief of Wine Spectator and is considered one of the world’s most influential wine critics.

To create the list, he traveled to Spain and tasted almost 1,200 different wines, from all different regions and price points.

The number one wine was Vega Sicilia’s Unico, described as “Spain’s most iconic wine in every respect—pedigree, longevity and consistency—and the 2006 is a landmark vintage,” according to jamesuckling.com.

Three of the wines to make the top ten come from La Rioja and the winery Alvaro Palacios appears most often on the list. The wines selected reflect both tradition and modernity, a wide range of different style and a large number of different regions and grapes.

The top ten are as follows: Vega Sicilia Ribera del Duero Unico 2006, Muga Rioja Prado Enea Gran Reserva 2010, Compañía de Vinos Telmo Rodriguez Rioja Las Beatas 2014, Artadi Viña El Pisón 2014, Descendientes de J. Palacios Bierzo La Faraona 2015, Cune Rioja Real de Asua 2001, La Rioja Alta Rioja Gran Reserva 890 2005, Lopez de Heredia Rioja Gran Reserva Vina Tondonia 1996, Terroir al Limit Priorat Les Tosses 2015, and Contino Rioja Gran Reserva 2010.
