“Free-from” and functional foods are two of the trends that have characterized recent years in terms of evolution in the food industry. Spain has not been oblivious to this, and numerous Spanish companies have developed products that are free of certain nutrients or enriched by others. The main goals are to answer demands from consumers that might be vegetarians, vegans, have specific food allergies, suffering from Celiac disease, or those who need an extra dose of one nutrient or another. Furthermore, this trend is primarily linked to more natural foods that don't contain additives or preservatives unless strictly necessary.
These Free-From / Functional Foods will enjoy a special place in the limelight at the upcoming edition of SIAL Paris, which will include the presence of Spanish companies. One of these is Casa Amella, a company that champions an organic, conscious, and seasonal diet. Professional visitors that attend SIAL and the Spanish Pavilion, organized by Foods & Wines from Spain-ICEX and the Spanish Trade Commission Office in Paris, can get a first-hand look at some of Casa Amella’s products, including its creamy organic pumpkin soup, whose ingredients are pumpkin (53%), carrots, onion, extra virgin olive oil (all of which are organically cultivated) and sea salt.
What’s more, this product is gluten and dairy free with no added sugars, and it is apt for vegans, made using seasonal vegetables and low in sodium. This product provides a clear example of how innovation, when applied to product manufacturing, is a driving the Spanish agri-food industry towards new consumers and new markets.
