The 4th edition of the Spanish Wine Fair is Ghana is underway. Organized jointly by ICEX and the Spanish Embassy’s Economic and Commercial Office in Accra, this event features wines that already have a presence in Ghana’s market as well as those that are looking to connect with distributors there.
Accordingly, the goal of the fair is to provide a platform for Spanish winemakers to enter the market by enabling them to showcase their products, to increase the presence of Spanish wines overall in Ghana, and to promote the quality of Spanish wines to an audience primarily made up of industry professionals.
Attendees are mainly procurement managers from hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, and convenience stores, as well as wine importers and distributors. Participants include local Spanish wine importers along with Spanish producers who travelled to Ghana for the occasion.
Ghana is an interesting market, with wine consumption increasing notably between 2009 and 2012. Wine imports doubled as a result. As for the market there, demand for quality bottled wine among people with medium-high incomes is on the rise, and has been for the last few years. This fair aims to cater to this growing interest in DO wines. There is also considerable interest in sparkling wines, which is a market with good potential in the future. Other wines are looking to leave their mark on consumers in Ghana, such as sherries and sweet wines, as wine consumption among the local population increases.
