Spanish Agri-Food Exports Increase by 97% in Last Decade.
Great news for agri-food producers in Spain in 2018: exports maintained their upward trend, exceeding an impressive 50 billion euros. This reflects growth of 0.6% compared with 2017, and this data was recently revealed in the Annual Foreign Trade Report for 2018, published by the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.
This performance strengthens Spain’s position as the fourth-leading exporter in all the European Union, trailing the Netherlands, Germany and France.
It’s also worth noting that agri-food exports account for 17.7% of total exports from Spain and that, between 2009 and 2018, this industry’s exports increased by an incredible 97.3%.
As for destination markets, the EU is the main recipient of agri-food and fish products, accounting for 73% of the total. In 2018, exports were valued at 36.901 billion euros. Within the EU, France is the primary destination, accounting for 22.3% of exports. Germany and Italy rank second and third, respectively. Outside the EU, the main markets for Spanish goods are the US, China, Japan, Switzerland and Morocco.
Spanish products are also increasingly popular in Asia, where four markets account for 22% of the total, namely China, Japan, South Korea and Hong Kong.
What’s more, the Spanish authorities have been diligently working to obtain authorization for the export of animal products to different countries. As a result, producers from Spain are now exporting to 90 new markets and there are around 48 agreements currently pending. New authorizations were approved in Vietnam, China, Thailand, Argentina, Brazil and Colombia in 2018.
