DO Cava’s Regulatory Council has asked six world experts in sparkling wines to take a closer look at its segmentation and zoning project, the goal of which is to “highlight the quality, differentiation, origin and prestige of Cava,” according to a press release from the council. Ultimately, they want to be able to increase transparency and provide consumers, as well as sommeliers and wine professionals, with more information about their wines, vines, and vineyards, as well as promote sustainability.
The six experts are Pedro Ballesteros, Master of Wine; Ferran Centelles, sommelier and wine writer; Sarah Jane Evans, Master of Wine; Richard Juhlin, a recognized expert on champagne; Fernando Mora, Master of Wine and winemaker; and Tom Stevenson, an award-winning wine writer. They were chosen for their professionalism and extensive experience in the industry.
Cava is working on a segmentation and zoning project, which is one of the pillars of the DO’s strategic plan. It’s also looking to expand its marketing to increase Cava’s prestige and boost consumption, both in Spain and beyond. At the moment, over 60% of sales are exported, and the DO expands over 38,000 hectares of vineyards and includes 6,800 winegrowers. The wineries, of which there are almost 400, sell their wines in over 100 countries.
