Canary Islands Named One of the Best Wine Travel Destinations of 2017

Canary Island wines are ungrafted, and there are many indigenous grape varieties, adding to their uniqueness

The prestigious Wine Enthusiast Magazine recently released its top ten list of the Best Wine Travel Destinations of 2017. Unsurprisingly, that list included destinations like Provence, France and Sicily, Italy, as well as Spain.

The magazine highlighted Spain’s Canary Islands as one of the best wine destinations of the year, and offered a great overview of where to stay, where to eat, what to do and when to go to the famous volcanic archipelago.

As the article points out, Island wines are ungrafted, so they grow on ancient root stocks. There are several great wineries to try these amazing products, including Bodega Los Berrazales, Bodegas Monje, and Bodegas Suertes del Marqués. Visitors should head for the tasting room to get an idea of what these wines are like.

Another aspect that sets Canary Island wines apart is the fact that there are several indigenous varieties, including three native Malvasia grapes and two strains of Albillo. Although the Islands have been known in the past for their sweet wines, now there’s a greater focus on dry ones.
