Fuentes del Silencio Winery’s Terroir Described as “Exceptional”

The winery is built on an old gold mine which, together with the winemakers’ efforts, has provided the conditions to create truly unique wines

Many people would agree that Spain produces some outstanding wines, but now it’s official. A recent wine study called WineSeq®, carried out by California-based company Biome Makers, has confirmed that the terroir where Fuentes del Silencio winery is located, Herreros de Jamuz (Leon province), is one of the most exceptional in all of Spain, Italy and the US.

This is because of its incredible diversity: the winery is built on an old gold mine, and the auriferous, or gold, sediments formed by sandy-clay conglomerates on which the vines have grown has resulted in a very unique microbiome. In total, 959 different species were identified. As a result, Biome Makers have given it the name “auriferous terrior”.

This situation is attributable to several factors, such as the area where the winery is built and also efforts at environmental preservation. Fuentes del Silencio has also made an effort to revive abandoned parts of the vineyard, including centuries-old vines like Alicante Bouschet, Prieto Picudo and Mencía.

According to Biome Makers, the terrior composition allows for “an exceptional metabolic environment from which the vines are nourished,” which is a major distinguishing factor. The unique biodiversity and balanced soils reflect the dedication and excellent work by the winery, and its commitment to sustainability.
