Wines from Madrid Beat 10-Year Record

For the first time in over a decade, Designation of Origin Vinos de Madrid has reported sales of more than four million bottles of wine on the national market in 2017, a figure that it has not equaled since 2006.

These sales represent a 12.4% increase in sales with respect to 2016, or 445,827 bottles of wine. According to comments made by the Madrid regional Department of the Environment head Pedro Rollán, this increase reflects, "A clear symptom of the recovery of the regional wine sector... and a recognition of the effort that the wine makers in the Community of Madrid have made to recover the good name of the region's wine and for the excellent work carried out during recent days, making Madrid wines a reference for quality both on a national and international level."

With fifty associated wineries, DO Vinos de Madrid (Wines from Madrid) boasts 8,848 hectares of vineyards spread over fifty-nine towns.

The region exports its wines to countries including the United States, Germany and China, thanks in part to promotional efforts carried out by the region in conjunction with the Regulatory Board of Designation of Origin Vinos de Madrid.
