Oviedo, Capital of Asturias, Named Spanish Capital of Gastronomy for 2024

The Asturian capital is home to countless gastronomic delicacies, from cider and fabada stew to its extensive selection of cheeses

The Spanish Capital of Gastronomy for 2024 as officially been announced. Oviedo, the capital of Asturias, will be in the spotlight, sharing the very best of its local cuisine, culture, and natural landscapes.

Oviedo is home to 6 protected designations of origin for its cheeses, wines, and cider, and to protected geographical indications for its cheeses, beans, and beef. 

The city is known for many delicacies. They include fabada, a delicious bean stew made with chorizo and morcilla sausages; cider, a drink that is intertwined with Asturian culture; fish and seafood from the Cantabrian Sea, which includes dishes like pastel de cabracho (scorpionfish) and pixín (monkfish) a la sidra; cachopo, a battered dish made with local beef filets, ham and cheese; and hundreds of varieties of cheese from Asturias, among them Cabrales, Gamonedo, and Afuega l’Pitu can be tried in most of the restaurants of the city.

According to the panel of judges who made the final decision, “Oviedo surprised us with the interesting gastronomic events that are going to take place over the course of the year. We’re certain that they will attract countless visitors.”

Oviedo was also highlighted for its up-and-coming status as a tourist destination and the impending arrival of a high-speed train, which will make it easier to reach. The city also has noteworthy cultural heritage and an outstanding hotel and catering industry.

The Asturian city takes over Cuenca (Castile and León), The Spanish Capital of Gastronomy for 2023. This distinction was created in 2012 with Logroño (La Rioja) as the first elected city, followed by Burgos (Castile and León, 2013), Vitoria-Gasteiz (Basque Country, 2014), Cáceres (Extremadura, 2015), Toledo (Castilla-La Mancha, 2016), Huelva (Andalusia, 2017), León (Castile and León, 2018), Almería (Andalusia, 2019), Murcia (2020 and 2021) and Sanlúcar de Barrameda (Andalusia, 2021).
