Paula Fandiño

The Woman Behind an Iconic Albariño

Paula Fandiño (Pontevedra, 1977)  is the dynamic force steering Mar de Frades, one of Galicia’s most celebrated wineries. Since 2007, she’s been crafting wines that capture the essence of the Atlantic coast, blending tradition with innovation.

Paula’s connection to wine began in her childhood, harvesting Albariño grapes with her cousins and savoring the fresh must. This early exposure ignited a passion that led her to study Agricultural Engineering and Oenology at the University of Santiago de Compostela. Her academic journey was complemented by practical experiences both in Spain and abroad, enriching her winemaking expertise.

"To innovate is to seek the expression of the terroir and the Atlantic, in order to convey it to anyone looking for a modern and daring glass of wine.” - Paula Fandiño to Interempresas

Innovating with Albariño

At Mar de Frades, Paula has redefined Albariño. She introduced the first 100% Albariño sparkling wine made using the traditional method, Mar de Frades Brut Nature, now a flagship of the Rías Baixas DO. Her approach emphasizes expressing the grape’s vibrant character and the unique terroir of Galicia.

Under Paula’s leadership, Mar de Frades has expanded its vineyards, including the acquisition of Pazo do Monte, where 19 hectares of Albariño are being cultivated. This initiative aims to enhance wine production and establish a prominent enotourism destination.

"My role is to interpret the grapes that the climate and the vineyard offer us each year; in the winery, I shape the design conceived for each wine, and finally, I bottle wines created for enjoyment and pleasure.”

Recognized as one of Spain’s most influential female winemakers, Paula is part of the 30% of women in the Spanish Federation of Enology, a field traditionally dominated by men. Her success is a testament to the evolving landscape of the wine industry, where women like Paula are leading with expertise and passion.

When not in the vineyard or cellar, Paula enjoys wine tasting, spending time with family and friends, and embracing the outdoors, whether it’s sunbathing in summer or skiing in winter. Her holistic approach to life and wine continues to inspire and shape the future of Mar de Frades.
