5-stars love for wine
Gemma Vela is more than just a sommelier; she's a pioneer who broke barriers in Spain's wine scene. Since 1995, she has been the head sommelier at the Mandarin Oriental Ritz in Madrid, making history as the first woman to hold such a position in a five-star hotel in Spain.
Born in Madrid, but raised in Aranda de Duero, a town renowned for its wine culture, Gemma's passion for wine was almost inevitable. She began her career in prestigious establishments like Lasarte in San Sebastián and Hotel Echaurren in La Rioja. Her journey led her to the Ritz, where she has spent over three decades curating an extensive wine list that boasts over 1,000 references, with a strong emphasis on Spanish wines.
"In Spain, we don’t just have great wines — we have the great wines of the world.” - Gemma Vela to El País
Breaking Gender Norms
Entering a male-dominated profession, Gemma faced skepticism and surprise, especially as a young woman donning a sommelier's leather apron. However, her dedication and expertise have earned her respect and recognition. In 2013, she was awarded the National Gastronomy Award for Best Sommelier, acknowledging her 28 years of commitment to the craft.
As she continues her journey at the Ritz, Gemma remains dedicated to her mission of bringing the world of wine closer to people, a 5-stars mission.
"I always knew I wanted to do something different and exciting, and little by little, the world of wine captivated me.” - Gemma Vela to Selects Wines
