Galicia’s “Grande Dame” of Albariño
Marisol Bueno is a pioneering force in the world of Albariño, the iconic white wine of Galicia. As the founder of Pazo de Señorans, she has dedicated over four decades to elevating this varietal to international acclaim.
Originally from Zaragoza, where she was born in 1948, and trained in biology, Marisol's journey into viticulture began in 1979 when she and her husband, Javier Mareque, purchased a 16th-century estate in Meis, nestled in the heart of Rías Baixas. Their vision was clear: to cultivate Albariño grapes in a region renowned for its unique terroir. This marked the inception of Pazo de Señorans, a winery that would become synonymous with quality and tradition.
Under her stewardship, Pazo de Señorans has become a benchmark for Albariño wines. Marisol's commitment to showcasing the aging potential of Albariño led to the creation of the "Selección de Añada" in 1995, a wine that has garnered critical acclaim for its depth and complexity. Her efforts have not only spotlighted the grape's versatility but have also contributed to the global appreciation of Galician wines.
"Rías Baixas is nothing like it used to be — the transformation has been complete. This is a region where everyone wants to invest.” - Marisol Bueno to Galicia en Vino
Leadership and Recognition
Beyond her role as a winemaker, Marisol has been a significant figure in the governance of Rías Baixas. She served as the president of the Denomination of Origin (DO) for 21 years, from 1986 to 2007, playing a pivotal role in shaping the region's wine regulations and promoting its wines internationally.
Marisol's contributions have been widely recognized. In 2017, she received the FEVINO Award for Excellence, becoming the first woman to be honored in this category. Her international influence was further acknowledged in 2018 when she was inducted as a "Caballero del Vino" by the Gran Orden de Caballeros del Vino in London, recognizing her efforts in promoting Spanish wines in the UK.
“The white wines of Rías Baixas are enjoyable, easy to drink, and easy to understand.” - Marisol Bueno to Bodeboca
Today, Pazo de Señorans continues to thrive under Marisol's guidance, exporting its wines to over 35 countries. Her unwavering dedication to quality, tradition, and innovation has not only transformed the landscape of Galician winemaking but has also cemented her as a leading figure in the global wine community.
