Spanish cheese holds no secrets for her

Meet Michele Buster: the cheese evangelist who’s been bringing Mediterranean flavors to American tables for nearly three decades. As co-founder of Forever Cheese, Michele has transformed the U.S. cheese scene by introducing artisanal gems from Spain, Italy, Portugal, and beyond.

Michele’s love affair with Spain began in the 1980s during her time as a student in Valencia. That experience ignited a passion for Spanish culture and cuisine that would shape her future. Initially working in the sports industry, her career path took an unexpected turn when she met her Italian partner, Pierluigi Sini, whose family had been crafting Pecorino Romano for generations. Together, they ventured into the cheese business, and in 1998, Forever Cheese was born.

Michele’s mission was clear: to share her love for Spain by introducing high-quality Manchego to the American market. But she didn’t stop there. Her relentless pursuit of exceptional products led her to discover and import a variety of Spanish delicacies, including Marcona almonds, Calasparra rice, and the nearly extinct pan de higo, which has since become a hit in the U.S.

A great promoter of Spanish cheeses

Her efforts haven’t gone unnoticed. In 2023, Michele received the Foods and Wines from Spain Award at the San Sebastián Gastronomika culinary congress, recognizing her unwavering commitment to promoting Spanish products abroad.  She’s also a proud member of the International Guilde des Fromagers and an honorary member of Portugal’s PDO São Jorge Consortium.   

Beyond business, Michele is deeply invested in preserving traditional pastoral and cheesemaking professions. She’s vocal about the challenges facing these industries, from dwindling milk supplies to the aging workforce. Through initiatives like “Salva Pastores,” Michele aims to modernize and revitalize these essential roles, ensuring that the art of cheesemaking thrives for generations to come.
