The Author That Transformed Everyday Spanish Cooking into a Cultural Cornerstone
Simone Ortega remains an icon of Spanish cuisine, thanks to her timeless cookbook, 1080 Recetas de Cocina (1080 cooking recipes), which has sold over two million copies since its first release in 1972. Simone’s recipes have been a staple in Spanish kitchens for decades, shaping home cooking across generations.
Born in Barcelona in 1919 to a French family, Simone moved to Madrid, where her love for food blossomed. Her second husband, José Ortega Spottorno—a founder of El País newspaper—encouraged her to put her favorite recipes into a book. What started as a personal project turned into a cultural phenomenon. Her mission? To preserve the traditional recipes she had inherited from her mother and grandmother while making them accessible to everyday cooks.
The original 1080 Recetas de Cocina was simple and practical—no glossy photos or fancy layouts. Instead, it focused on detailed, reliable instructions for home cooks. It covered everything from classic Spanish dishes like tortilla de patatas and gazpacho to more elaborate fare. Its no-nonsense approach made it an instant hit.
"All the recipes in my book are very easy and always turn out well.” - Simone Ortega
In 2007, to celebrate the book’s 35th anniversary, a revamped edition was published in both Spanish and English. This updated version featured a fresh design and illustrations by the acclaimed artist Javier Mariscal, giving it a modern twist while keeping the heart of Simone’s recipes intact. The new edition introduced her work to a global audience, ensuring her legacy continued to grow.
Throughout her life, Simone received numerous accolades for her contributions to Spanish gastronomy. In 1987, she was awarded the Premio Especial de Gastronomía (Special Gastronomy Prize), recognizing her impact on Spain’s culinary culture. A decade later, the Spanish Ministry of the Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs honored her with the Premio Alimentos de España (Spanish Food Prize).
In 2006, Simone was awarded France’s prestigious Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Order of Arts and Letters). Accepting the award, she expressed heartfelt gratitude, saying, “You have brought happiness to an old lady who has always been in need of love, affection, and... chocolate.” Her warmth and humility shone through in that moment, reflecting the same spirit found in her recipes. He passed away in Madrid in 2008, at the age of 89.
