Spanish alternative protein startups being propelled by governmental funding instruments.
In the early beginning of 2020 the Spanish Government made its first ever investment in plant-based meat by funding Heüra with €250.000 allowing the startup to accelerate and scale its production as well as boosting international expansion.
The backing was the starting point for a consistent and solid proposal to launch Spain as the food nation is transforming today. And now in 2021, 3D printing pioneer Novameat has secured a round of €250.000
With this investment we will be able to accelerate the launch of our technology and scale beyond 3D printers to produce thousands of kilograms of whole plant meat cuts per hour, with industrial machines based on microextrusion,” says Alexandre Campos, director of business development at NovaMeat according to Vegconomist.
Large food corporations are shaping the early adoption of alternative proteins
Zyrcular Foods, one of Spain’s alternative protein producer and distributor leaders recently announced the opening of its new facility ready to produce up to 1 million kilograms of plant-based protein a year.
According to Green Queen, “Santiago Aliaga, CEO of the firm, says that they have “gone from being a distributor of big international plant protein brands to producing them under contract. This is a significant milestone for innovation in the food industry in Spain”.
