Spanish FoodTech Companies, Wildly Successful on the Prestigious 2023 FoodTech 500 List

25 Spanish companies scored high enough for inclusion on the list, which highlights entrepreneurial talent in foodtech around the world

 Spanish company Heura Foods, which creates 100% plant-based fish and meat, has made it to the Top Ten of  the 2023 FoodTech 500 list, which has recently been officially released at an event in London.  Founded in Barcelona in 2017, this social-mission-turned-business is committed to creating a healthy, sustainable food landscape.

The list 2023 FoodTech 500 list, inspired by the Fortune 500, highlights global entrepreneurial talent that combines food, technology, and sustainability.

The companies included on the list have been assigned several scores relating to business size, sustainability, and digital footprint. The first predicts their growth based on financial indicators, the second score reflects their alignment with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, and the third estimates the growth of their digital presence. The companies with the highest scores are included among the top 500.

An impressive 25 Spanish companies were included on the list, most of them recipients of many awards for being complete standouts in foodtech innovation.

They are as follows, aside the aforementioned Heura (number 7).

At 58 is ZoomAgri, a global AgTech company that transforms testing, inspection and certification of agri-food commodities and food using machine learning  and computer vision.

Consentio is ranked 61st; this company created a platform to connect and centralize fruit and vegetable sales for producers, wholesalers, and supermarkets.

Groots, 87th, is looking to revolutionize agriculture by growing plants with a completely innovative vertical hydroponic system. This allows for a more productive use of farmland, reduced water usage, year-round production, and more energy efficiency.

Väcka, coming in at spot 132, is an innovative producer of vegan cheese products, made from ingredients like olive oil and fermented melon seed milk. They sell a range of options, from cream cheeses to mature cheeses.

Natural Machines (146) is the company behind Foodini, a 3D food printer used by restaurants, food service providers, producers, hospitals, etc. to elevate their creative food potential. Foodini provides an optimized and sustainable way of offering customized food and ingredients using state-of-the-art technology.

Alimentos Sanygran (166) creates healthy, sustainable plant-based foods like Legumeat, an alternative to meat using legumes, and Buenggies, nutritious ready-made meals with meat substitutes made with vegetable protein.

Spherag (230) created an intuitive, multi-device platform allowing users to access accurate information, schedule tasks and take real-time actions remotely on water management systems. It offers integrated solutions in irrigation management using IoT and cloud services.

Novameat (245) is a plant-based meat producer using unique and exclusive technology to make chicken, beef, and turkey. Its products are made with water, pea protein, sunflower oil, fava bean protein concentrate, and other natural ingredients.

Agrosingularity (277) makes plant-based products for the food and biotech industries as part of its goal to feed the world with natural and sustainable ingredients.

Ingredalia (313) uses cutting-edge technology to create, produce, and place on the market natural, functional ingredients for different industries using plant by-products as raw materials.

MOA foodtech (328) specializes in upcycling and uses biotechnology and artificial intelligence to transform by-products of the agri-food industry into a “next-generation protein” with high nutritional value that is 100% sustainable.

Right behind them is Libre Foods (329), which is reinventing meat like bacon and chicken and making them from fungi, focusing specifically on the root: mycelium.

And right after them is Nucups Nanotechnology (330). This company offers a new encapsulation technology for the industrial development of nanocapsules and biocapsules for bioactives and probiotics.

Cultzyme (344) is a cutting-edge bioprocessing expert, driving progress in cell growth and fermentation. It produces innovative, efficient bioreactors which integrate the latest hardware with AI and cloud computing to accelerate the development of sustainable alternative proteins and life-saving therapies.

Uobo (382) makes 100% plant-based eggs and is the first beaten egg in Europe. It can be used in everything from Spanish omelet to scrambled eggs.

Entomo Agroindustrial (397) is a leader in developing industrial projects to produce insects, such as the black solider fly, for the transformation of organic matter into raw materials with high added value.

ODS Protein (410) is a start-up specializing in the production of alternative proteins based on an innovative fermentation process. Its goal is to offer a sustainable, delicious solution for protein consumption worldwide known as mycoproteins.

Naturbec (420) uses innovative technology to improve the quality and productivity of crops. It uses sustainable and eco-friendly solutions to achieve healthier and more profitable harvests.

Pink Albatross (425) makes plant-based ice cream from 100% natural ingredients, such as coconut milk and cashews.

Gundo (440) is an app that allows users to receive personalized recommendations that allow people to eat a healthier diet. They can personalize their experience with lists of healthy foods to buy, a nutritional score of the food in their shopping cart, and nutritional information about different products.

Poseidona (461) is committed to providing the food industry with alternative proteins that are sustainable and restore the oceans. Along those lines, it develops sustainable proteins from algal waste and invasive biomass to make delicious, mouthwatering products.

Isauki Seafood (462) is a plant-based fish and seafood brand with a mission to take plant-based seafood a mainstream. It uses microalgae and seaweed to create its products.

Pack2Earth (470) makes robust materials from plant matter and minerals for the packaging industry and has become a leader in sustainable packaging.

Coming in second-to-last on the list is Mundo Healthy (499), which focuses on different food matrices in the food sector as part of its goal to transform food towards a more innovative industry based on delicious, high-quality, healthy food with nutritional benefits. Its main product is a hydrolyzed egg white protein.
