The vast mountains of Spain and their unique, sometimes wild wines are right up my calle!
I will be presenting a special selection of some of those striking Spanish wines at the 2025 Wines from Spain tasting in London on 1 April.
Travelling to various vineyards that enjoy a distinct mountain influence, some of which are also grown at altitude, we will start our journey in Valdeorras, in north-western Spain. There we will taste an outstanding Godello from Spain’s green and hilly Galicia. While not conjuring images of high mountains, wines made in the area enjoy the fresh forest influence surrounding one of the region’s higher vineyards.
Sticking with whites and the north of Spain for our second wine, we’ll head east to Somontano, at the foothills of the Pyrenees. The vineyards here are some of the most northern in the country and enjoy the freshness that the mountain range brings to the region. Wines with latitude! My pick is an elegant, textured, Garnacha Blanca.
Then on to one of Spain’s most exciting zones, the Sierra de Gredos, for a serious white wine made in the DO Madrid. In this part of the Madrid winemaking region, old vines are grown on granite-based soils which bring an enviable tension and electricity to the wines.
Staying in Gredos, we visit DO Cebreros, where vineyard sites are located from 600 to 1,200 meters above sea level. This is the heart of the Gredos mountain range, and there we will taste a Garnacha produced from 100 year-old vines.
To finish our tour, we will enjoy two outstanding reds, an elegant Garnacha made just south of Pamplona from one of the most innovative producers in the region, and the last, an exceptional single vineyard wine from one of the higher zones of Rioja.
These are wines with inherent freshness and complexity, and with fabulous natural acidity they are built to last.
