What are the Spanish wines everyone should have on their lips? Beth Willard reveals her top tips…
If you want to know what is hot in Spain right now, join me at the Wines from Spain Annual Tasting 2025 in London on 1 April for my ‘New Trends’ guided tasting at 2.30pm.
This will be a fun tasting! I have selected six exciting wines, which represent current trends and developments in Spanish wine.
We will start with four white wines whose styles are gaining recognition among Spanish consumers.
The first one will take us to Galicia, one of Spain’s great white wine terroirs. But rather than its famous neighbour Rías Baixas, Ribeiro is the protagonist here. Wines from Galicia are hot right now, dominating wine lists in all the best bars in Madrid, and this is one of the region’s finest producers.
But this white wine revolution encompasses so much more. For the next wine, we head to Navarra, a region usually associated with Garnacha. But here we find a new dry Moscatel aged on lees in concrete. And then we shoot south to Toledo to taste an old vine, ungrafted Airén grown on limestone soils, These are textural wines from less famous or underrated varieties that Spain is starting to explore and rediscover.
Our fourth wine will take us back north to the Basque Country for a complex Txakolí with real weight and aging potential: part of a new wave of gastronomic wines from this corner of Spain. Traditionally light bodied and with a little spritz, Txakolís now come in all shapes and sizes, and are highly sought after by the region´s top chefs.
We will finish the tasting with two red wines. First we go to Toro where we will taste a wine that may surprise for its elegance (and for the variety – it´s Garnacha, not Tinta de Toro!). Toro is a region rediscovering its origins. Yes, the wines are big and bold but there is a renewed focus on fresher styles of wines, less reliant on oak, that show off the region’s old vine fruit.
Finally, we will end in Rioja with a delicious wine that many may think is modern but, in fact, reveals the complexity of the region’s old co-planted vineyards. This focus on single vineyard expression, and the recuperation of old vines, has been one of the most exciting developments in Rioja.
Salud!
