Spanish Wine, Pairings and Top Wineries Took Center Stage at Madrid Fusión: The Wine Edition

Madrid Fusión 2021, the most influential gastronomy conference in the world, included a new feature this year: Madrid Fusión: The Wine Edition, a conference that aligned perfectly with the history and prestige of the gastronomic event, focused on highlighting new trends and new talent and providing a forum for discussion and learning in the wine industry.

In this first edition, of which Wines from Spain was the main sponsor, attendees enjoyed round table discussions, tastings, pairings, and events with professionals like sommeliers, winemakers, exporters, distributors, etc. Below are five features behind the success of the first edition of this wine event:

  • The topics addressed included an analysis of how the best wine lists are created at leading Spanish restaurants such as EtxebarriCoque and Quique Dacosta, whose sommeliers shared insider information on how to choose wines based on the dishes prepared by their chefs and the preferences of diners, both national and international.
  • Natural wines? Biodynamic wines? Organic wines? Oenologists Peter Sisseck and Raúl Pérez spoke about the connection between wines and nature, terroir, authenticity... Peter Sisseck, from Dominio de Pingus, said, "Good wines can only be made with good grapes, and good grapes can only come from balanced vineyards."
  • Informal pairings: we're used to major debates about which food goes with which wine, but... at The Wine Edition, there was also a space for casual pairings, such as natural wine and pizza, wine and hamburgers, and the always-popular pairings between wines and cheeses.
  • Great tastings by great wineries: The Wine Edition also included master tastings with some of the most important Spanish wineries. That was the case with the vertical tasting of top red and white wines from Conde de los Andes (DOCa Rioja), entitled "The modernity of the past and the traditions of the present." Pago de los Capellanes (DO Ribera del Duero) celebrated its 25th anniversary with a presentation called “Paths through vineyards and life”, which featured both old and new wines. One of the most popular activities was the vertical tasting of Tinto Pesquero.
  • Autochthonous Spanish varieties were also in the spotlight, with presentations such as the one by Norrel Robertson MW on Garnacha and native varieties in Tenerife.
