The winners of the Alimentos de España award for Spain’s best wines in 2024 have been announced, recognizing sector’s excellence and dedication to quality.

In the red wine category, the winner was Pago de los Capellanes. Un Sueño en las Alturas 2020, a Ribera del Duero DO wine produced from Tempranillo grape by Pago de los Capellanes in Burgos (Castile-León). This is a red wine that balances fruity intensity and herbal freshness and feels concentrated on the palate.

In the white wine category, Guitián Fermentado en Barrica 2020, a Valdeorras DO wine made from Godello grape in Ourense (Galicia) by Bodega A Tapada took home the honors. This is a wine that is very complex on the nose,  with notes of white fruit and wildflowers. It has a fresh and aromatic palate.

The winner in the rosé category was the Ribera del Duero DO wine Salgüero Rosado 2019, produced in Burgos by Pradorey from Tempranillo, Merlot and a touch of Albillo Mayor. It has a sophisticated and complex nose. Feels creamy on the palate with a hint of liqueur.

The winning sparkling wine was Codorniu Ars Collecta Blanc de Noirs Reserva 2019, from Barcelona, in Cava DO wine, made by Codorniu with a blend of Pinot Noir, Xarel·lo and Trepat. This is a wine with delicate bubbles, a nose with floral aromas and red fruits, coming from Pinot Noir, and a free and creamy palate.

And the winning liquor wine was Amontillado Añada 1975, a Jerez-Xérès-Sherry DO  product from González Byass. It has aromas of dried fruits, toasted almonds, hazelnuts, and dried apricots. Delicate and subtle with oxidative nuances and a slight hint of liqueur at the finish. On the palate, it is compact and dry, with a progression marked by old tannins that intermingle with dried fruits and toasted notes.

These prestigious awards, which date back to 2013, support and help promote Spain’s winemaking industry. They also raise awareness about Spanish wines included in the European Union’s Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) and Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) quality schemes.

Spain is a global powerhouse among winemaking countries, with more than a million hectares under vine and 139 wine-producing regions. It’s home to over 200 grape varieties and extremely varied landscapes, which in turn yields a great diversity of wines. Today, producers are truly embracing indigenous varieties of grapes and paying homage to their unique terroirs while also showing a dedication to sustainability and organic viticulture.
