Contino Celebrates 50th Vintage with ‘Chorus’ , a New Addition to La Place de Bordeaux
Spain is celebrating a new addition to La Place de Bordeaux, the historic, multi-tier wine distribution system, with a wine that honors the 50th vintage of a globally renowned winemaker.
Viñedos del Contino Chorus (2024) is a 100% Tempranillo collaboration between CVNE’s Viñedos del Contino and Guillaume Thienpont of Pomerol's Vieux Château Certan.
Contino was founded in 1973 by the 145-year-old CVNE winery, becoming the first château-style single-vineyard estate in the DOCa Rioja region, using only grapes grown on its land. Produced in collaboration with winemaker Guillaume Thienpont of Vieux, one of the oldest estates in Pomerol, Bordeaux, the exclusive wine had a limited production of approximately 2,900 bottles priced between €150 and €180.
La Place de Bordeaux is a historic wine distribution system originating in 17th century France. It connects wine estates (châteaux) with global buyers through a network of brokers (courtiers) and wholesalers (négociants). The system has global reputation and reach, enabling wine producers to sell their vintages in a very short space of time – sometimes within days, hours, or even before the wine is bottled.
La Place de Bordeaux is built on centuries of tradition and reputation. A place within this system is a hallmark of authenticity and the highest quality.
Chorus Tasting and Pairing Notes
CVNE’s CEO, Victor Urrutia, described Chorus as a “choral work comprising a Spanish voice and a French accent.”
Expect aromas of fresh plum, red cherry, and ripe pomegranate, with delicate floral undertones and subtle sweet spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. On the palate, it’s dry, fine-grained, and velvety, with exceptionally polished tannins and a medium to full bodied weight. Despite this, it remains vibrant and fresh. A long, precise finish with subtle minerality leaves a lasting impression.
Pair it with roasted red meats such as cochinillo (suckling pig), aged jamón Ibérico, and milk-fed lamb, or DOP Queso Manchego PDO to match its fruitiness and subtle spice.
Spanish Wines on the La Place de Bordeaux
Chorus is not the first wine to be released on this major marketplace in recent times. The Rioja-based group’s revamped single-vineyard red, Real de Asúa Carromaza, was welcomed onto La Place de Bordeaux in 2022.
Several other iconic Spanish fine wines are distributed through La Place de Bordeaux. Yjar, from family-run winery Telmo Rodríguez in DOCa Rioja, became the first Spanish wine sold through La Place de Bordeaux, debuting with the 2017/2018 vintage. Others include L’Ermita from Álvaro Palacios in DOQ Priorat, Finca Las Tapias by Marqués de Riscal in DOCa Rioja, and Vivaltus by Ribera del Duero, as well as Dolio from Adega Algueira in DO Ribeira Sacra, Galicia.
