Two Spanish brandies have been recognized for their exceptional quality and production methods, picking up top prizes at the World Drinks Awards 2026, announced at a prestigious ceremony in London, UK.
The World’s Best Wine Brandy award went to Fundador Supremo 15, a brandy aged in sherry casks from Bodegas Fundador, the oldest winery in the Marco de Jerez. Fundador's brandies are celebrated for their rich, traditional DO Jerez-Xérès-Sherry processes, which are often aged in sherry-seasoned casks. The Supremo 15 Years Old Amontillado is characterized by its warm, balanced, and elegantly dry taste profile with hints of nut and oak.
The World’s Best Flavoured & Speciality Spirit award was given to Suau Orange, Brandy con Naranja. This award-winning brandy was produced by Bodegas Suau, a traditional, family-run boutique distillery located in the district of Marratxí, just outside Palma de Mallorca.
The exceptional taste of Suau Orange is produced by blending their signature 8-year-old or 15-year-old aged brandy with slow and considered macerations of locally grown oranges from the town of Sóller in Mallorca. The result is a beautifully balanced, complex, and refreshing taste profile of sweet oranges, bitter peel, ginger, and cayenne, appealing to both brandy lovers and cocktail enthusiasts alike.
The World Drink Awards is a globally recognized competition that selects, rewards, and promotes the best alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks worldwide. The competition evaluates the highest-quality products through rigorous blind tastings judged by a panel of international experts, including distillers, brewers, journalists, and buyers.
Anita Ujszaszi, awards director, said: “The announcement of the World's Best winners is a special moment every year, as these winners represent the absolute pinnacle of drinks craftsmanship. This year's winners embody not only exceptional quality, but also the diversity, innovation, and heritage that define today's global drinks industry. The same can be said for our Icons of Drinks winners, whose contributions continue to shape the future of the sector.”
David T Smith, category chair, added: “It's been another incredible year for the World Drinks Awards and what excites me most is the increasing quality and innovation we are seeing across categories, countries, and continents. The passion for creating and sharing outstanding spirits and drinks is thriving around the world.”
The main producing regions of brandy in Spain are Jerez, in Andalusia, and Penedés, in Catalonia, both of which are under a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI). According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (Ministerio de Agricultura, Pesca y Alimentación – MAPA), Spain currently produces over 13 million liters of PGI brandy per year, around 72% of which is exported.
Approximately 7 million liters of Spanish brandy are produced in Jerez, in Andalusia, with the remaining 6 million produced in the town of Penedès, in Catalonia. Almost all Brandy del Penedés is sold to other countries (88.62%). In the case of Brandy de Jerez, exports account for 54.20% of its total sales.
Key export markets include European countries such as the UK, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Switzerland, alongside key markets in Asia, such as Japan and China.
