D.O. Granada

The territories assigned to the Denomination of Origin Granada include all the 168 municipalities of the Province of Granada, coinciding with the provincial boundaries, recognizing a specific protection in the subregion named Contraviesa-Alpujarra, formed by the municipalities of Albondon, Albuñol, Almegijar, Cadiar, Castaras, Lobras, Murtas, Polopos, Rubite, Sorvilan, Torvizcon, Turon and Ugijar.

With Mediterranean and continental influence, the temperature and fresh air drafts from Sierra Nevada produce a beneficial effect that predisposes grapes to a higher development of polyphenols which grants wine the color, the softness and a tannic structure. The average altitude of the vineyards of Granada is about 1.200 meters. The soils present variable compositions of slate and clay.

Granada cultivates 5.500 hectares of vineyards that produce between 30 and 40 million kilograms of grape per year.

In general conditions, the maximum production admitted per hectare must be of 7.000 kg for red grapes destined to oak ageing, of 8.000 kg for red grapes destined to the elaboration of young red wines, of 9.000 kg for white grapes and of 12.000 kg for grapes destined to elaborate sparkling wines. In those parcels destined to elaborate wines with the specific protection from the subregion named «Contraviesa-Alpujarra», the maximum production admitted per hectare must be of 6.000 kg for red grapes (with the exception of Tempranillo variety that must be of 7.000 kg), of 8.000 kg for white grapes and of 12.000 kg for grapes destined to elaborate sparkling wines.

Authorized varieties for the entire production zone:

White: Vijiriega, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Moscatel de Alejandría, Moscatel de Grano Menudo (or Morisca), Pedro Ximénez, Baladí Verdejo, Palomino, Torrontés
Red: Tempranillo, Garnacha, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Monastrell, Romé, Petit Verdot
For sparkling wines: Vijiriega, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Moscatel de Alejandría, Moscatel de Grano Menudo (or Morisca) and Torrontés.

Authorized varieties for the specific protected sub-region named Contraviesa-Alpujarra:

White: Vijiriega, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Moscatel, Baladí Verdejo.
Red: Tempranillo, Garnacha, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah, Pinot Noir, and Petit Verdot.
For sparkling wines: Vijiriega, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir.
