The 37th edition of the World Cheese Awards, held for the first time in Switzerland, saw Spain take home 20 Super Gold medals (the highest distinction) and an array of other awards.
The ceremony included a new award for 2025 – the “Es La Leche Award”, recognizing the vital role of milk in cheesemaking. Airas Moniz producers Ricardo Outeiro and Xesús Mazaira Varela were the inaugural winners from Spain, thanks to their commitment to sustainable herding and milk quality. This award will become a permanent fixture at the World Cheese Awards.
This international event – organized by The Guild of Fine Food with more than 5,000 cheeses from 46 countries – brought together thousands of varieties of cheese from around the world, to be assessed by experts such as the Super Jury, along with cheese lovers and professionals in the sector, during the three-day event.
Spain performed particularly well at the 2025 World Cheese Awards, winning 20 of the available 110 Supergold medals. Many Spanish cheeses also made it through to the final stages of the contest. Some of the top Spanish cheeses awarded are:
L'ovella del Pirineu and Sarró de búfala from Catalonia (Super Gold)
Quesos Cerrato Umami (the 5th flavor) from Palencia (Super Gold)
Queso Adictivo: From Quesos Quevedo in Valladolid (Super Gold)
Quesos Pajarete's semi-cured goat's cheese from Cádiz (Super Gold)
Curado de cabra leche cruda and Oveja al romero Gran Reserva from Extremadura (Super Gold)
Azul de Bunker blue cheese from Quesería O Xortical in Aragón (Gold)
Queserías Picos de Europa blue cheese from Valdeón (Gold)
Quesos el Bosqueño won 20 medals across different categories, making this cheesemaker from Cádiz the Spanish dairy with the highest number of medals won. In total, there were 1 gold, 8 silver, and 11 bronze medals, thanks to their variety of cheeses including sheep cheese cured with aged rum and goat cheese with oloroso wine.
More Spanish awardees include Quesos Quevedo, winning not only a Super Gold, but also a silver for their Quevedo Original with Truffle and a bronze for Quevedo Gourmet. Or Queserías Aragonesas, who as a collective won 3 gold medals, 8 silver and several bronze medals. And the Mahón-Menorca DOP cheese for scoring 10 medals across its different producers.
It is true that the Swiss, apart from being excellent producers, took many of the top spots in 2025, thanks to being close to home. Therefore, it will be very interesting to see what happens at the next World Cheese Awards, which as the Super Jury announced, will take place in Córdoba, Andalusia, in Spain.
