Spanish wine sees bright future as it was honoured by wine trade veterans of the Knights of the Great Order of Wine

Spain’s wines have a bright future in the UK, the country’s ambassador has told the fortieth annual gathering of the Gran Orden de Caballeros del Vino, as the organisation welcomed three new members.

The “Knights of the Great Order of Wine”, the premier professional group promoting Spanish wines in the UK, selects three individuals each year in recognition of their work championing the wines of Spain. This year’s new Caballeros were formally welcomed at the 40th Annual Investiture Dinner at the Landmark London Hotel on 12th June, in front of over 250 guests.

The new Caballeros announced at the event were Hugo Campbell, director of importer Ehrmann’s; Ben Henshaw, founder and director of importer Indigo Wines; and César Saldaña, President of Sherry’s Consejo Regulador.

Speaking to the gathering, the Spanish Ambassador in London, His Excellency José Pascual Marco, acknowledged the impact on winemakers of climate-change-driven weather events in Spain, most tragically last Autumn’s catastrophic floods in Valencia and elsewhere. He also noted tough conditions internationally for the wine trade. However, he told attendees that “Spanish producers are adaptable and resourceful” and hailed their progress on sustainability, highlighting the country’s world-leading progress in organic wine and renewable energy.

A message reinforced by Pablo Conde, Director General for International Business Development, ICEX and Acting Chancellor for The Gran Orden, who during his speech, noted that Spain’s €3 billion-a-year wine exports rose last year, and that the UK was their largest market, before going on to add that “this would not have been possible without the hard work of passionate and talented individuals” and thanking the Caballeros for their commitment to Spanish wine.

Created to raise the profile and increase the market share of Spanish wines in the UK, the Gran Orden de Caballeros del Vino celebrates each individual member’s dedication to Spanish wines.
