Riofrío 1963 Takes Home Alimentos de España Award

This Spanish company is the first in the world to obtain organic certification for its world-class caviar

Riofrío 1963 is in celebration mode thanks to a recent award from the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. The company took home the Alimentos de España 2020 award for its organic sturgeon and caviar in the Organic Production category of these distinctions.The Loja-based company (Granada) is a global leader and a pioneer in its industry with its luxury, haute cuisine products. And not only is it one of the leading aquaculture companies in all of Europe, with species like Adriatic sturgeon (Acipenser naccarii), Russian sturgeon (Acipenser gueldenstaedtii), and Beluga (Huso huso), it’s also the first company in the world to obtain organic certification for its caviar. In Spain it’s also certified for organic trout production. The company also stands out for its commitment to R&D and innovation, its capacity to create jobs, its interest in improving water treatment and its use of hydroelectric power.

According to Carlos Cadenas, CEO of Riofrío, “Receiving the Alimentos de España award is an enormous and emotional distinction. This award confirms that our decision, though risky at the time, was well worth it. The Alimentos de España Awards aim to recognize companies and professionals that produce, offer and raise awareness about quality Spanish foods and that help make Spain’s food industry sustainable and efficient.
