Spanish Dairy Industry’s Únicla Becomes First Net Zero Carbon Emission Producer

From the use of Elopak cartons to its efforts to restore forests in Galicia, Únicla goes above and beyond with its commitment to the environment

There are many Spanish agri-food companies that are committed to sustainability and the environment, but one stands out in particular at the moment. Únicla has been working tirelessly over the years to reduce its environmental footprint and has become the first net zero carbon emission producer, offsetting its carbon emissions for the packaging and production of its 1-litre 100% natural, 100% Galician milk, full cream milk. To achieve this, they are helping restore forests in Galicia, and the rest of Spain, destroyed by fires through an agreement with Fundación Arume to offset emissions from milk production. They go one step further by using Elopak cartons, which are certified carbon neutral. As a result, this offsets all of the carbon emissions from their manufacturing.

Únicla goes above and beyond, reducing its carbon emissions by 20% every year compared with conventional milks and using caps and cartons that are made from renewable forest resources. Their milks are certified with the Galega 100% and Galicia Calidade quality seals and their farms are the first in the region to receive the animal welfare certification from AENOR. Únicla is part of the CLUN dairy farm cooperative and is the result of a research project and received the European Award for Cooperative Innovation in recognition of its efforts to improve milk’s nutritional profile and obtain the best tasting milk.
