The regions of Rioja and Ribera del Duero are so pleased with the 2019 vintages that they have rated it as “excellent.” This is especially good news given the pandemic and the current market situation.
Rioja hasn’t seen a harvest as good as this one since 2011. The 2019 harvest yielded wines with “rounded tannins, good structure and intense colors,” according to Pablo Franco, the DO’s technical director. The “excellent” rating is the result an exhaustive assessment process that involved tasting and analyzing all of the wines produced in the DO. Around 150 professionals tasted over 4,500 samples.
Franco also highlighted the grapevines’ outstanding health and the well aerated bunches, noting that, “The year was marked by the stability of the vines’ growth,” according to reservadelatierra.com. Franco went on to describe the 2019 vintage as “ ‘THE vintage.’ A vintage which reflects the true mastery of time management by grape growers and winemakers.”
In Ribera del Duero, the 2019 vintage was also rated “Excellent.” According to Enrique Pascual, President of the Regulatory Council, “The conditions in 2019 were exceptional,” with incredibly healthy vines, as well as a “concentration in the quality of the product that was outstanding,” according to abc.es. The result is superior quality wine that reflects the history of Ribera del Duero and Pascual expects people to be talking about the 2019 vintage for some time to come.
