Almost 300 wines, sent by the Spanish exhibitors of the ICEX Pavillion at Prowein 2022, were blind tasted and evaluated beforehand by a jury of experts from the publishing house Meininger Verlag.
The result is a selection of 100 top-class wines in five price categories.
The expert jury was very satisfied with the high quality of the wines, a characteristic that was constant in all price categories, from the entry level to the premium segment, among the classics as well as among the new discoveries. These, by the way, were particularly praised by the jury. It was agreed that smaller producers and lesser-known regions had taken the opportunity to face the competition at this extensive tasting and thus gain attention. With success, as it turns out.
Once again, Spain lived up to its reputation as a highly exciting wine country - even for experienced professionals and Iberian connoisseurs, the tasting held great surprises and interesting developments.
The freaks and sommeliers know that the country is a real white wine treasure chest, but the word has not yet spread enough to the broad majority of wine fans. The blancos of the "Best of Spain" tasting can change that: From fresh, uncomplicated Verdejo to noble and matured Albariños to real discoveries like Albillo from high altitudes and an impressive Maturana Blanca, the spectrum is immense.
There is also a lot of dynamism when it comes to red wine, including trends such as single-varietal Garnachas from Rioja, single-vineyard Tintos and the high-quality tradition of long-matured Gran Reservas and Reservas.
With excellent sherries, both from organic and oxidative maturation, Andalusia contributes an invaluable unique selling point to Spanish wine culture – a high number of medals in the product category proves that these products also deserve all the attention they are currently receiving in the German and international media.
The detailed results and winning wines will be available here and in all Meininger publications from 25 February, 2022!
