José Andrés Brings Spanish Breakfast Dishes to Bethesda

The main focus is definitely breakfast, with lots of egg options as well as novel ideas, Andrés also offers some comfort food and lunch dishes on the menu

José Andrés has gone and done it again: he’s added a new locale to his empire in the US. This time it’s called Spanish Diner, which serves homemade breakfast-themed dishes from Spain. This new venue actually replaces one of the chef’s other outlets there, Jaleo, and given the diner’s success in New York City, he decided to open a second one in Bethesda. It seats 100 inside and 50 people outside. At Spanish Diner, customers can tuck into a wide variety of egg dishes and, according to Andrés, “Egg is the smartest protein in the history of mankind. No one cooks eggs like the Spanish do. The culture of eggs is huge in Spain,” according to dcist.com.

One of the menu highlights is eggs over easy served on top of fried potatoes and either chorizo, morcilla or strips of ham. Another popular dish is tortilla de patatas chips, which is essentially Spanish omelet made with the chef’s potato chips, optionally topped with chorizo or beef honeycomb tripe. Although breakfast dishes dominate the menu, there are some proposals that are more “lunchlike,” such as cheese and charcuterie platters, soups, stews and also salads. There’s talk about adding olive oil pancakes to the menu in the future, along with dishes from South and Central American cuisines. Andrés may seem unstoppable, opening up new locales in Chicago and New York City in addition to this diner in Bethesda, but he maintains that he will not rest until he brings Spanish food to every corner of America. Now that’s a great ambassador!
