As a sensible and attractive alternative to physical tastings ICEX/Wines from Spain is, once again, organising what will be the second virtual wine tasting in Greece, involving Greek participants from the gastronomy and specialised trade, as well as lecturers and opinion leaders from the Greek Horeca and wine sectors.
The virtual wine tasting, which will take place on June 17, will combine the presentation of wines that are already present in Greece, together with other high-quality wines that are not yet present in the Greek market but are looking to gain a foothold in it.
|
The virtual tasting will be hosted by the sommelier and wine connoisseur Andreas Matthidis, who not only is the President of the Greek Sommelier Association but also has a high degree of recognition in the local market and a deep knowledge of Spanish wines.

The size of the wine market in Greece, close to 3,000 million euros, is catered to a large extent with national product. However, in recent years Greece has been importing more and more wine. The reason for this is twofold: for starters, the Greek public has been displaying an increased sophistication in its taste, coupled with a growing interest and curiosity towards new quality products, notably wine. Moreover, in the coming years the consumption of wine in Greece is expected to increase by 3% as regards 2019 and the turnover of the wine market in the market is expected to reach 3,543.5 million euros in 2024.
In addition, Greece has experienced a boom in the tourism sector in the past years. Indeed, Greece has shown a continuous positive trend in terms of annual number of tourists, that peaked in 2019 with the record figure of 34mn visits, together with a continuous increase in the average spending per visitor. Although the Greek tourism sector was severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, the main actors in the market expect that Greece will almost triple its touristic activity in 2021 in comparison to the previous year, with the tourism season probably extending its duration until November. Most market participants expect to recover a large share of the inflows of tourists and revenues obtained in 2019.
The success of the wine tastings organized in previous years, with at least an annual tasting since 2015, has contributed to a greater presence of our wines in the Greek market, also allowing the Greek public to attain a better knowledge of Spanish wines. Thus, this new tasting in virtual format will provide Spanish wine with a renewed impulse in the country, with a particular view in both the 2021 summer and Christmas seasons.
Accordingly, the aim of this activity, organized by ICEX Spain Trade and Investment / Wines from Spain in collaboration with the Economic and Commercial office of the Embassy of Spain in Greece, is to raise the profile of Spain’s products and strengthen their presence in Greece.
