Top Honors for 9 Spanish Wines at Decanter World Wine Awards

Hundreds of Spanish wines also received platinum, gold, silver and bronze awards, along with international trophies

The Decanter World Wine Awards have come and gone, leaving behind a selection of the very best wines in the world. This prestigious event, which is alsothe biggest and most influential of its kind, celebrated its 18 th edition as wines from every corner of the globe—more than 18,000 to be exact—competed for an award: gold, silver and bronze; and also platinum, best in show and international trophies. The wines underwent a rigorous judging process by a group of experts, resulting in an elite list.

Spanish wines really stood out in the 2021 competition, and while hundreds of wines from Spain received awards, nine of them received the highest possible distinction: Best in Show. They are: Albariño from Mar de Ons (Rias Baixas), Heretge Carinyena, from Scala Dei (Priorat), Las Planas Viura from Real Agrado (Rioja), Mencía from Matilda Nieves (Ribeira Sacra), Classica from Hacienda López de Haro (Rioja), Gran Muralles from Familia Torres (Conca de Barberà), Voltons from La Conreria d’Scala Dei (Priorat), Solera AOS Rare from Osborne (Sherry), and Finca Aylés from Cuesta del Herrero (Aylés). Twenty wines from Spain took home platinum medals, 24 received international trophies, and more than 400 received gold medals. All in all, Spain did a great job representing the diversity and quality of its wines.
