Spanish Jorge Ordóñez Selections Nominated for Importer of the Year

The family-run business was the first to import several types of Spanish wine in the US when little was known about Spanish wine there

Big news for Spanish company Jorge Ordóñez Selections, which was just nominated for the Importer of the Year award by the prestigious publication Wine Enthusiast.

Jorge Ordoñez Selections is a multi-generation family business that is currently helmed by Jorge’s children Víctor and Mónica, while Jorge produces wine in several Spanish DOs.

This company is a standout in particular because it was the first to bring several types of Spanish wine to the US market for the very first time, include Albariño wines from Rías Baixas DO and brands like Martín Códax; Garnacha wines from Aragón made by Bodegas Borsao; Monastrell wines from Jumilla produced by wineries like Bodegas Juan Gil; and Godello wines from Valdeorras from Bodegas Godeval.

Jorge’s goal from the beginning has been to “seek out and preserve Spain’s rich multi-millennial history of viticulture and winemaking” and to represent “honest wines with a sense of history, culture, and roots.” His company works exclusively with artisan producers using authentic and non-interventional farming and winemaking methods and endeavors to highlight those wines’ provenance and integrity.

Víctor Ordóñez has a lot on his plate this year, as he is a part of the Wine Advisor Council and a round table participant at the Spain Food Nation Summit. Importer of the Year is one of the important accolades being presented as part of the Wine Enthusiast Wine Star Awards, an annual event that celebrates industry leaders and raises the profile of winning winemakers and wine sector professionals. There’s one other Spanish nominee: Bodegas Esteban Martín, for European Winery of the Year.
