Madrid-Based Angelita Debuts in The World's 50 Best Bars List

Multi-level cocktail and wine bar Angelita has entered the prestigious World’s 50 Best Bars list, securing 50th place after narrowly missing out last year. The Madrid-based venue, located in the city’s vibrant Chueca neighborhood, is named in honor of the mother of owners Mario and David Villalón, two brothers who have spent the past 10 years creating a unique blend of farm-to-table dining and groundbreaking mixology.

The Roots of Spain
Angelita’s current cocktail menu, Raíces (meaning ‘roots’), is a celebration of a decade devoted to originality and ingenuity. Every item on the ingredient-focused, eco conscious menu is concocted entirely from local produce, the majority of which is cultivated in Angelita’s own Zamorano garden.

‘Resina y Sombra’ is a mezcal-based cocktail infused with chanterelle mushrooms that blends earthy, mineral flavors with fresh citric notes. Another highlight is ‘Pimiento y Rábano’, a heady, herbal cocktail with notes of smoke and a touch of spice. Padrón peppers are smoked over rockrose embers before being distilled, bringing wood-smoke aromas and a subtle tangy sweetness.

Another highlight is La Huerta (‘the garden’), Angelita’s signature celebration of local produce. It features gin, garden fruits and vegetables, and roots sourced from the family farm in Zamora.

The Golden Age of Spanish Cocktails
Angelita’s debut on the World’s 50 Best Bar list highlights the burgeoning success of Spanish mixology on the global scene, as does the inclusion of two renowned Spanish cocktail bars in the World’s 50 Best Bar list. Barcelona-based Sips, previously ranked #1 in the world, took #16th in this year’s edition. Highlights from Sips’ menu include Blanc, which features Brandy from Jerez infused with pine nuts, raisins, and freeze-dried spinach, creating a silky smooth, elegant cocktail.

Another Barcelona-based previous winner, Paradiso, came in at #17. The bar’s ‘Sea Heart’ cocktail brings smooth, oceanic flavors with a blend of Manzanilla sherry, gin, pine nuts, olives, black cardamom, and seaweed soda.

An additional three Spanish bars made the top 100 list. Barcelona’s oldest cocktail bar, Boadas, climbed over 30 places to make #52. The bar’s ‘Air Mail’ cocktail features rum, Cava, fresh lime juice, and Galician honey.

Salmon Guru retained its place at #66 on the list. The Madrid-based bar, founded by mixologist Diego Cabrera in 2016, recently celebrated its 10th anniversary. Standout tipples include the ‘Journey of Flavour’, which pairs rum with sugared pistachios, Oloroso wine, green tea cordial, and cardamom bitters, and the ‘Coffee Break’, a blend of Lepanto Jerez brandy, Tia Maria, espresso coffee, and Pimentón de la Vera.

Another Barcelona establishment, Foco, completed the list of Spanish entries, coming in at #90. Foco’s ‘Stone Fence’ builds its flavor around an aged amontillado sherry and Manzanilla fizz, complemented by bourbon and apple.

The World’s 50 Best Bars list is owned and organized by William Reed Business Media, the group behind The World’s 50 Best Restaurants. It has been ranking the best bars in the world since its inception in 2009.
