Miguel Carretero Wins “2018 World’s Best Ham Croqueta”

The 2018 Campeonato Internacional Joselito a la Mejor Croqueta de Jamón del Mundo came to a close on Wednesday at Madrid Fusión.

The search for the current "World's Best Ham Croqueta" is over, with chef Miguel Carretero of Santerra restaurant in Madrid taking home the top award for his original recipe.

Sponsored by famed Spanish ham maker Joselito, the finals of this annual culinary challenge are held year after year at international culinary conference Madrid Fusión.

This live-cooking championship features all six finalists preparing their recipes, this time before a jury comprised of journalists, chefs, food critics and José Gómez, representing Joselito.

Underlining the importance of béchamel as an essential ingredient in Spanish croquetas, the members of the jury first tasted each of the chef's béchamel sauce, before proceeding to the blind tasting of the finished croquetas.

The morsels were then evaluated on a number of additional characteristics, including size, time spent in the fryer and the type of oil used. 

In addition to the champion, Miguel Carretero, this year’s finalists were Javier Farpón of Casa Farpón restaurant in Mamorana, Pola de Lena (Asturias); Alberto Lareo of Manso restaurant in Santiago de Compostela (Galicia); Carlos Crespo of Bodega del Riojano in Santander (Cantabria); Antonio Pérez Rubio of Casa Zaldierna restaurant in Zaldierna-Ezcaray (La Rioja); and José de Dios of La Primera restaurant in Madrid.

Thanks to his winning recipe, Carretero was presented with an exquisite 2008 Joselito Vintage ham, while his creation now holds the title of the "2018 World's Best Ham Croqueta."
