The 2019 edition of Olive Japan has come to a close and the winners have been announced after careful consideration from a panel of 26 judges from around the world. A total of 701 extra virgin olive oils from 24 different countries entered the competition, and 9 olive oils took home the Best of Show 2019 accolade, while there were 179 gold medals and 288 silver medals.
It should come as no surprise that Spanish olive oils performed very well, taking home 5 of the 9 Best in Show awards. Distinguished oils include Family Reserva Picual (Castillo de Canena), Melgarejo Picual Premium (Aceites Melgarejo), Oleum Artis (Pagos de Familia Marqués de Griñón), XY (X 37 Grados Norte), and Cupage (Oro del Desierto). There were also 12 “2nd Best in Show” awards, of which 5 went the following Spanish producers: Almazara Molero Maza; Knolive Oils; Olivapalacios; Colival; and Sucesores de Hermanos López.
Of the 179 gold medals, 88 went to olive oils from Spanish companies such as Almazaras de la Subbética, Cortijo de la Loma, SL, Aires de Jaén, Aceites Vicente Méndez, SL, Oleostepa, Casas de Hualdo, Finca La Torre and Masia El Altet.
Of the 288 silver medals, 66 Spanish companies were recognized, including Oliaesa, Hacienda Guzman, Olivar de Moura, Olive Gallery, SL, Aceites Balcón del Sur, Henri Alegria, Cal Saboi, Oleum Priorat, and Bernat Vallespi Vidal.
