Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Capital of Gastronomy for 2022
This city from Andalusia is home to a wide range of gastronomic treasures and traditions, especially seafood and sherry
It has officially been announced that Sanlúcar de Barrameda (Cádiz, Andalusia) will be the Spanish Capital of Gastronomy for 2022. This honor will provide the perfect platform for promoting Spanish gastronomy from this city and region. They panel of judges based its decision on Sanlúcar’s many attributes, which include its climate, the stunning Doñana natural park, the reputation of its hospitality, and its countless gastronomic treasures. There are two products in particular for which the city is most known: prawns and Manzanilla sherry. The prawns are fished in shallow waters in the Gulf of Cadiz by a fleet comprising 55 boats. The judges highlighted their “unique and distinct flavor,” their versatility and their important role in traditional seafood dishes.Manzanilla sherry, which has had a designation of origin since 1964, has “an exceptionally long ageing process… and complex and powerful [aromas].” The public and private sectors are working together though the Fundación de la Manzanilla to recover sherry-related customs and traditions.
Sanlúcar gastronomy also includes other emblematic items such as a wide range of fried fish, such as garlic prawns with fried eggs and also cuttlefish; seafood stews, like clams with noodles; rice with duck; and fresh produce. The city is also home to a vibrant tapas culture, especially in the Plaza del Cabildo, where seafood salad, thin prawn omelets, and potatoes with mackerel are some of the main attractions.Andalusia, the region which borders Spain’s southern coast and where Sanlúcar de Barrameda is located, is a very popular tourist destination. Other noteworthy cities include Seville, Córdoba, Granada and Málaga, and the region is home to many UNESCO World Heritage sites, such as the Alhambra in Granada, the Real Alcázar of Seville, and the Mezquita of Córdoba. From olive oil tourism in Jaén to Carnaval in Cádiz, there’s no shortage of amazing things to do in Andalusia.
