Aranda de Duero Crowned European Wine Capital for 2020

The city won the distinction in part for its steadfast commitment to
sustainable winemaking and its desire to raise awareness about related
techniques.

It’s official: Aranda de Duero has been named European Wine Capital for 2020. The city in Burgos, Castile-León, competed with other leading cities for the title, specifically Cariñena, Haro and Rueda. However, it came out on top thanks to its focus on sustainable winemaking, which was extremely well received by the panel of judges. It’s about time, too: Aranda de Duero was a finalist in this same competition just three years ago, but it lost out to Cambados, in Galicia. The panel of judges was comprised of professionals from Spain, Italy and Portugal.

In the coming year, the city will host a plethora of wine-themed activities and events that will help raise awareness about its unique landscape, gastronomy and cultural heritage. One of the most interesting activities will be a fair/forum that aims to highlight sustainable techniques in winemaking.

Representatives from Aranda de Duero will be very busy for the rest of 2019 and in 2020, attending all kinds of events, including the INTUR and FITUR fairs. The city government will receive a budget of 4.8 million euros, which will be used to roll out the many wine-related activities it has planned.
