Cookie Company Fontaneda Celebrates its 140th Anniversary

The company’s cookies can be found in one out of every five Spanish households, and growth has been on the rise in recent years

An institution on Spain's cookie scene is celebrating a major milestone: Fontaneda marked its 140th anniversary in 2021.
The company's unwavering commitment to growth, sustainability, and innovation is among the reasons their cookies are so popular in Spain and can be found in one out of every five households.

The stats are impressive: According to Nielsen, Fontaneda achieved growth of 12.5% in 2020 in the sweet cookie category and a market penetration of 20.9%, according to a 2021 Kantar report.
Mondelez International, of which Fontaneda is a part, produces an impressive 50 million cookies every day at its factory in Navarre, of which 20% are Fontaneda, specifically Digestive, Digestive Finas, and La Buena María.

The company stands out in particular for its sustainability measures, in place since 2011 such as, for example, sustainably growing wheat and planting flowers that favor pollination and avoid the disappearance of bees and butterflies, as part of the Compromiso Harmony program. It is especially dedicated to working with local farmers to protect the environment.

Fontaneda is also a standout when it comes to innovation, launching new products like Digestive cookies with chocolate chips and creating fruit and nut bars with chocolate and hazelnuts, crunchy palmier cookies, and wafers. It also sells cookies that are sugar- and gluten-free.
