POLAND FLAG

Organic winemaking is a current trend all over the world. Winemakers are cutting back on chemicals in their cultivation, becoming more aware of the harm it can cause, and consumers are looking for healthier, more natural foods. Organic products are grown in soils richer in nutrients, that are passed on to plants and their fruits, including grapes.

Spain is a world leader in organic production. It has the largest area of certified organic vineyards in the world.

In agriculture, and especially in viticulture, fungal diseases resulting from humidity are the great risk. Spain has a privileged situation. Its climate, hot and dry, provides excellent conditions for vine growing. The humidity that leads to the development of mildew or mold simply does not occur.

Why else Spanish winemakers choose to cultivate the vine organically? On one hand, it is sometimes for market reasons. By observing trends, winemakers want to meet customer demand. On the other hand, organic winemakers note that working without chemicals, in harmony with nature, makes the vines more sustainable. This is always an advantage when producing high-quality wines. For this reason, more and more producers in Spain apply ecological practices in the cultivation of vineyards and in vinification. In Spain there are also many organic producers with no certification, although applying organic farming They do not choose to undergo the certification procedure, just to be allowed to use an inorganic product in case a crisis occurs, and crops need to be saved.

The expansion of organic vineyards goes hand in hand with the development and implementation of various preventive systems, such as more accurate, satellite weather forecasts, sanitary information systems, etc., which provide important information about the condition of the vineyard. They allow to follow up the vegetation all the time and prevent the use of unnecessary treatments.

An interesting example of linking quality with organic farming is the new Cava regulation. In the 'Cava de Guarda Superior' category, all grapes must come from organic vineyards. This is a formal requirement that must be observed by all the growers. From 2025, all cavas from the de 'Guarda Superior' category will be organic.
