New Book Ethos Priorat Offers Up-Close Look at Top Spanish Wine Region

A beautiful new limited edition book, Ethos Priorat, is available for wine lowers. This new text takes a closer look at Priorat DOCa , in the Catalonian province of Tarragona, and provides readers with more details about the area’s wines, spirit, and nature.

Written by, photographed, and designed by Elizabeth Hecker, this +300 page book is features full-color photography on high-quality paper, effectively transporting readers to the region. The forward was written by wine writer Andrew Jefford. Hecker has spent more than 15 years in the area, getting to know the local vineyards within the region’s 12 viticultural areas. She shares her experiences in this book, along with the stories and memories she head from the locals. She also includes information collected while meeting with experts in winemaking, geology, and regional history.

Chapter one takes a closer look at Priorat’s terroir, climate, biodiversity, and soil, while chapter two tells it history, from the Carthusian monks that lived there in the 12th century all the way to today. Chapter three looks at the region’s world-famous wines and discussed the winemaking process.

This DOCa includes 11 municipalities, where producers are known for their red wines. The area’s unique terroir is attributable to its volcanic origin and is characterized by quartz and black slate soil called Llicorella. This special soil gives the wine a unique quality. Traditionally, this area is known for its Garnatxa Negre, Garnacha Peluda, Cariñena, Merlot, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes.
