There's at least one Spanish food product that has become a standout when it comes to exports: chorizo.

In the last year, which was especially challenging due to the global pandemic, exports of Spanish agri-food exports exceeded 47 billion euros, reflecting an increase of almost 6% over the previous year, according to the Spanish Chorizo Consortium. It's also worth noting that, in general, Spanish meats have seen an increase in exports over the past year.

According to data from the Chorizo Consortium, an association comprised by 22 leading exporters and producers, 3.6 million kilos of chorizo with the consortium seal we're sold in 2020.

The primary destination markets for this delicious Spanish product are France, the UK, and Germany, which account for around 80% of the total. With regard to the latter two, the presence of chorizo with the consortium seal in those countries has doubled, which has helped drive exports upwards, from 4.6% to 7.4%. Other important markets include Belgium, Portugal, the Czech Republic and Ireland. Beyond those European markets, other countries where consumers have a clear appreciation for chorizo include Canada and Colombia.

Given this excellent performance in 2020, chorizo exports are expected to perform positively in 2021.
