As a sensible and attractive alternative to the physical tastings, which unfortunately have to be cancelled due to the pandemic, ICEX/Wein from Spain is organising this year, in cooperation with Sommelier Union, a virtual tasting exclusively for participants from the gastronomy and specialised trade, as well as lecturers and opinion leaders from the Horeca and wine sector. Germany's Spain wine connoisseur David Schwarzwälder and Peer F. Holm take all participants on an entertaining virtual wine journey and present the Garnacha Fingerprint - surprise guaranteed!

The once so powerful kingdom in northeastern Spain is now an important wine-growing region and the most important stronghold for Garnacha cultivation worldwide. It forms the basis for fruity, expressive and well balanced red wines.

The vineyards of Aragón are situated at around 400 to 900 metres above sea level between the Pyrenees and the Iberian mountains. They are considered as a cultural and agricultural powerhouse, not least because of their enormously successful Garnacha plants. Since the 1990s Aragón has been divided into four D.O. areas with a total of 30,000 hectares. The most important in terms of area is the DO Cariñena with around 14,000 hectares, followed by Campo de Borja with 7,500 hectares, Somontano 5,000 hectares and Calatayud with 3,500 hectares. Later Aylés, the fifth appellation and so far the only D.O. Vino de Pago was added. The subdivision of the region into five appellations of origin was also seen as a decisive return to Garnacha's own expertise, after the grape had initially made a triumphal march halfway around the world. A successful strategy, which today is reflected at the top level in Aragonese Garnachas.

Duration: about 60 minutes for the presentation of the region, D.O.P.s and wines + 30 minutes for questions & answer
