Spain’s Refreshing Summer Spritzer: Tinto de Verano

When I hear “Tinto de verano,” I am immediately transported to a terrace overlooking a beautiful beach on a summer afternoon. Tinto de Verano reminds me of golden days by the Mediterranean Sea. Paella, friends, cold soups, long sunsets and fun!

Tinto de verano is a typical Spanish blend made with red wine and lemonade (lemon soda). It is perfect for hot and thirsty summer days. Incredibly easy to prepare, it is a perfect complement to any meal, or drink while having a few tapas. While there are many ways to prepare Tinto de Verano, the easiest is to use red wine (“tinto”) as a base, and soda. The drink can also be found already mixed and bottled at a grocery store. However, if you want to go all out and be a bit more of a gastronome, you can go for a more sophisticated version adding some brandy and fruit.

Tinto de verano finds its roots in the hot Córdoba summers, where locals would prepare this combination to try and beat the heat. This experiment was so well received that in the 1960s it was popularized, not only by restaurants and bars but also by brands and it began to be consumed throughout Spain. Now, it tops the list of worldwide perfect summer drinks; which you can prepare at home. Hot tip: make sure you are generous with the amount of lemon and ice. Here is what you need to do to prepare Tinto de Verano:

Ingredients
        3 to 4 ice cubes
        1/2 cup red wine
1/2 cup lemon-lime soda, such as Sprite or 7-Up
        Slice of lemon, for garnish
