Ribera del Duero DO Celebrates its 40th Anniversary in Peñafiel

The DO’s original founders were on hand, 16 wineries served their wines, and there were two commemorative tastings, among many other activities

Ribera del Duero is celebrating a major milestone: its 40th anniversary. The legendary designation of origin was officially created back in 1982, when its regulatory council was formed and its first regulations were approved.

A special event was held on July 23rd to commemorate the occasion, held in the Plaza del Coso in Peñafiel, to pay homage to the people behind this successful project. A total of 16 wineries attended and offered their wines to attendees, among them Bodegas Olimarum, Protos, La Luz del Duero, Tr3smano, Palacio de Villachica, and Mélida Wines. Two special commemorative tastings were also held with premium wines. Many of the DO’s original founders also attended and participated in the ceremonies.

What started out with just a dozen wineries back in the day is now a world-famous DO with 307 winemakers and almost 9000 vine growers. It’s a leader internationally, with a presence in over 100 countries, and it exports 18.2% of its production. It has a growing share of the national market and is swift and adept at adapting to changing market trends.

Said Enrique Pascual, president of the regulatory council, “We’re very proud and satisfied with our journey, and the example of our founders gives us the energy to build an even brighter future. They fought hard, worked hard, and dedicated time and effort to make this possible.”

Today, Ribera del Duero DO is an example of sustainability and of a commitment to culture, heritage, nature, and consumers.
