8 Wines from Spain Receive “Best in Show” Accolade at Decanter World Wine Awards

This award distinguishes the best of the best and included wines from Penedès, Bierzo, Rías Baixas, and several sherries, among others

Prestigious magazine Decanter recently announced the wines named “Best in Show.” This very special recognition is given to select wines at the annual Decanter World Wine Awards. These wines are considered the very best of the best and Spain had a particularly strong turnout.

There were 8 wines that made the grade: Albet I Noya, El Corral Cremat Brut, Penedés, 2021; Ramón Bilbao, Lalomba Finca Ladero, Rioja, 2018; Ramón Do Casar, Treixadura, Ribeiro 2022; Harveys, 30 Years, Amontillado, Sherry NV; Mar de Frades, Finca Monteveiga Albariño, Rías Baixas 2018; Bodegas Ysios, Finca Lagunazuri, Rioja 2018; Bodegas Y Viñedos Merayo, Las Tres Filas Mencía, Bierzo 2020; and Lustau, 30 Years Old, Oloroso, Sherry NV.

The Decanter World Wine Awards are often referred to as the “Olympics of the wine world,” as the platinum medal winners are all re-tasted to determine which are the absolute best. The wines are judged blind and only 50 wines receive the “Best in Show” accolade. Spain ranked second with 8 wines, surpassed only by Australia. Plus, 20 Spanish wines we awarded with a platinum medal including references from Jerez, Rioja, Ribera del Duero, Priorat, Jumilla and Ribeiro.

Plus 88 Spanish wines were awarded with a gold medal; 778 with silver and 1,123 with bronze. An amazing recognition to Spanish wines and wineries.
