7 Spanish Wines, in Decanter World Wine Awards 2024 Best in Show

The seven wines come from leading wine regions such as Toro DO, DOCa Rioja,  DOCa Priorat and Ribera del Duero DO, and also include a wine from Cava DO and a Jerez DO reference

Spain is known for its exceptional wines and extensive variety, with outstanding wines being produced across all of its designations of origin. This year, the results in the Decanter awards were outstanding, with 7 wines in the Best in Show category; 17 in the Platinum category; 89 entries in Gold; 945 in Silver, and 1,059 entries in Bronze.

Particularly significant are the seven Spanish wines that placed among the 50 best wineries worldwide: World Wine Awards 2024 Best in Show. It is a highly coveted honor that pitted more than 18,000 wines against each other, and the top 50 represent about 0.28% of the wines tasted in the entire competition.

Let's get to know the singularities of these wines that make them so special:

  • Alicia I Josep Viticultors, Perer, Priorat 2021, a DOCa Priorat  wine that reflects the complex typicity of its natural environment. It’s an elegant wine that is the maximum expression of the terroir.
  • Bodegas Frontaura, Aponte Plus Tempranillo, Toro 2018. Its Toro DO wines are produced from chalky, clay, and limestone soils from Tempranillo grapes. The extreme climate conditions and strong winds contribute to this wine’s unique character.
  • Bodegas Montecillo, Viña Monty Graciano, Reserva, Rioja 2016. DOCa Rioja wines have been produced by this winery since 1870, which they have been aging in their high-quality oak barrels in underground cellars since 1926. Their timeless, elegant wines reflect the typical Rioja character.
  • Valduero, Blanco, Reserva, Ribera del Duero 2016. This Ribera del Duero DO winery’s wines are aged in different oak barrels and this wine is made from Albillo Mayor grape.
  • Hacienda El Ternero, Gran Reserva, Rioja 2015, a Rioja DOCa winery located in a state where wine has been elaborated since 1077. It has a unique enclave in the Rioja Alta where grapes are harvested by hand and reflect the terroir.
  • Alta Alella, Mirgin Exeo Evolució Gran Reserva Brut Nature, Cava 2004 from Cava DO. This is produced by the family-owned winery in the Serralada de Marina Natural Park, outside of Barcelona, that practices certified organic farming techniques.
  • Bodegas Tradición, 30 Years, Amontillado, Sherry NV, the only winery in Jerez DO dedicated to producing exclusive very old sherry wines certified as VOS (Very Optimum Signatum), high-quality wines aged for over 20 years, and VORS (Vinum Optimum Rare Signatum), which are exceptional quality and have been aged for more than 30 years.
