Balanced, vibrant, and persistent, with a refined elegance that marks it as truly world-class.
These are the qualities that epitomize the Spanish national football team and helped them bring home the World Cup trophy for the second time in the nation’s history. These qualities also capture the essence of Marqués de Murrieta, the Spanish wine that was served within the VIP areas of the World Cup.
Marqués de Murrieta was chosen to be served to VIP guests at stadiums during the World Cup, bringing a taste of Spain to one of the world’s largest sporting events. Founded in 1852, Marqués de Murrieta is the oldest family-owned estate in DOCa Rioja. Today, it remains one of Spain’s most globally respected wineries, exporting wines to more than 100 countries worldwide.
A Vintage Year
The estate’s newly released 2022 vintage was one of the standout wines featured in the World Cup hospitality program.
The premium wine is produced primarily from grapes grown at its Ygay Estate, an area of 300 hectares of clay-limestone soil that surrounds the winery. It is a blend of Tempranillo (85%), Mazuelo (7%), Graciano (6%), and Garnacha (2%), and is aged for 25 months in American oak barrels.
Marqués de Murrieta 2022 brings aromas of ripe red fruit and liquorice, complemented by notes of chocolate liqueur. On the palate, it’s balanced and full-bodied, with a gentle acidity that brings firm tannins and a long, persistent finish. Pair with smoked fish, salted cod (bacalao al pil pil), Garbanzo de Fuentesaúco PGI chickpeas, Trufa Negra (black truffle), or a local olive oil (Aceite de La Rioja PDO).
The World Cup is the latest addition to Marqués de Murrieta’s extensive sporting portfolio. The pioneering winemaker has built a sporting legacy, partnering with some of the world’s leading sporting events, including ATP and WTA tennis tournaments, the Formula One World Championship and the UEFA European Championship. As one of Spain’s most historic wineries, it was a fitting choice to accompany the Spanish national football team during its historic victory.
